Breast inflammation is common and can come on fast. Current guidance has changed: deep massage, extra pumping and hot compresses can make things worse. Gentle, evidence-based care usually settles it quickly.
Signs it’s worth getting help
- A tender, firm or reddened area of the breast
- Repeated “blocked ducts” or episodes of mastitis
- Very full, leaky breasts and a baby who coughs or splutters at the breast (possible oversupply)
- Engorgement that makes latching difficult
What we’ll do together
We look at why it is happening — oversupply, pump use, latch, pressure from bras or sleeping position — and make a plan to calm inflammation while keeping milk flowing normally. As a doctor I can recognise when you need antibiotics or an ultrasound and make sure you see the right doctor quickly.
When it can’t wait
See a doctor the same day if you have a high fever, feel very unwell, the redness is spreading, symptoms are not improving within 24 hours, or you notice a painful swelling that could be an abscess. In an emergency call 112.
