Care

What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is the highest internationally recognised qualification in breastfeeding and lactation care. It requires extensive clinical hours, a rigorous exam and regular recertification by the IBLCE in the USA.

Why see a pediatrician who is also a lactation consultant?

Lactation consultants are experts in feeding, but they cannot diagnose or treat medical problems. As a pediatrician I can also examine your baby, recognise medical causes behind feeding difficulties — such as jaundice, infections or slow weight gain — and coordinate with your other doctors. One visit covers both.

When should I book?

Ideally before your baby arrives, so we can make a plan together. After birth, the sooner the better — most difficulties are easiest to fix in the first days and weeks. You don’t need a referral.

What happens during a consultation?

We talk through your history and goals, I examine you and your baby, watch a full feed, often weigh your baby before and after, and then agree a plan together. You receive a written summary in English and message follow-up afterwards.

How many visits will I need?

Many families need only one or two visits. More complex situations — such as slow weight gain or low supply — usually benefit from two or three, which is why the Fourth trimester package exists.

Do you support combination feeding and bottle feeding?

Yes. My role is to help you feed your baby in the way that is right for your family, with accurate information and without judgement.

Practical

Home visit, clinic or online?

For a first consultation in the early weeks, a home visit is often best — you stay comfortable and I see feeding in your real environment. Clinic visits suit older babies and planned consultations. Online consultations work well for follow-ups, pumping plans and prenatal preparation.

Can my partner join?

Absolutely — partners, grandparents or a nanny are very welcome. Feeding works best when the people around you know how to help.

Is it covered by insurance?

This is a private service and is not covered by the Hungarian state health insurance (NEAK). You receive an invoice in English, which many international and private insurance plans accept — please check with your provider.

How do I pay, and what is the cancellation policy?

[Payment methods — e.g. bank transfer or card.] Please let me know at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule. [Confirm final policy.]

I live outside Hungary. Can I book an online consultation?

Yes, for lactation support and education. Medical diagnosis and prescriptions are only possible for families who live in Hungary; if your situation needs medical care, I will help you find the right local doctor and share a written summary with them.

Is this an emergency service?

No. If you or your baby are unwell, contact your doctor or the on-call service. In an emergency call 112.

Living in Hungary

I don’t speak Hungarian. Can you work with my védőnő and pediatrician?

Yes. I can explain Hungarian medical documents and growth records in English, and — with your permission — share a written summary with your health visitor (védőnő) or pediatrician so everyone is working from the same plan.

What is a védőnő?

A védőnő is a state health visitor — a specialist nurse who visits families at home during pregnancy and after birth and follows your baby’s growth and development. The service is free and you are assigned one based on your address.

What should I expect from a Hungarian maternity ward?

Practices vary between hospitals — for example around rooming-in, visiting and supplementing. In a prenatal consultation we go through what to expect at your chosen hospital and what you can ask for, so you feel prepared.
